From Japanese (hide) 'esteem, excellence' combined with (yoshi) 'good' or (yoshi) 'good luck'. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Hideyoshi being his given name) was a 16th-century daimyo who unified Japan and attempted to conquer Korea. He also banned the ownership of weapons by the peasantry, and banished Christian missionaries.
